CAN FAITH HELP WITH YOUR MENTAL HEALTH?

I’m currently in the middle of reading a book by Jennie Allen, “Get out of your head,” and let me tell you, I’m only in chapter 4 and I am learning so much. She’s a Christian writer that talks about how she was able to overcome the cycle of negative thoughts.

Usually, everything we do stems from a single thought. She believes almost every negative thought could be classified under the following three lies:

  1. I am unlovable.

  2. I am worthless.

  3. I am helpless.

Think of what your fears are, what you are anxious about, and what causes you to spiral. Does it fit into any of the three? It probably will and she says God gave us a way out of these spirals.

“Take every thought captive.” And while this is a lot to even think of doing, maybe today try and rest and let God take care of you and tell you what you actually should believe. See how he took care of the following people. God wants to meet you where you are at.

Philippians 4:19 - And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.

Needs not only mean financial needs but also emotional, physical and mental needs.

  • When David was unstable mentally, He always ran to God and He poured his heart to Him. He knew and understood that it was only God who could really understand how he felt. In Psalm 42:5,11, we see the broken heart of the Psalmist but still, in the same verse, we also see him saying, “I'll put my hope in God.’’ The Psalmist understood that it was only God who could understand how he felt so in the midst of hurt, so he decided to draw hope from the giver of hope.

  • When Elijah was dealing with depression and suicide, he was honest to God about it and since God knew exactly what He needed (food, sleep and strength), He gave it to Him but, one thing I know is that, that sleep wasn’t the normal sleep we have, there had to be something special about it, God did something in Him that only He can testify. God gave him strength for the journey ahead.

LESSONS LEARNED:

  1. When in mental distress, be honest with God about it like Elijah and David. There is so much beauty in surrendering and being vulnerable with God. I'm not even sure if beautiful is the best word to describe it… but there is just something that happens when you let God sit with you in it.

  2. Know that God is always ready to listen and help; whether He’ll send friends your way, give you food, put you to deep sleep, encourage you, speak to you… be encouraged that God is always ready to help.

  3. Know that God cares about you amidst the mental struggles. He knows what you’re growing through so just surrender it to Him; lay it all down at his feet.

  4. You’re not abnormal to feel depressed or distressed, ask God to see you through.

God created emotions and He can ensure you’re mentally stable, if you let Him. Always rooting for you, Luna.
